WHAT'S NEW

CBC Hockey Anthem Challenge: "The Third Star"
JUL. 2008—You may have heard that the CBC has launched a national contest to find a new theme song for Hockey Night in Canada. I've taken up the challenge and invite you to listen to my entry here. Please take a moment to sign up, leave a comment and rating. Many thanks to Peter Stoll on clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax and bari sax; Richard Moore on drums; and producer Martin Deller at BoomKA! studios.

SSHRC Grant to Study Shostakovich
MAY 2008—I've been awarded a Doctoral Fellowship from the federal Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) for 2008-09 to support my research of the music of the Russian composer Shostakovich. The title of my research paper is "The View from Within: How Russian Music Theory Illuminates Harmony and Modality in Dmitriy Shostakovich's Middle-Period Symphonies (1937-1953)".

Gryphon Trio & Musica Camerata Perform Piano Trio
JAN. 2008—In the span of 10 days, my Piano Trio was performed twice in two cities: by the Gryphon Trio (Toronto, Jan. 28) and Musica Camerata (Montreal, Jan. 19). The performances generated some reviews: the critics noted its classical form and lyricism, compared its intensity to Shostakovich, and described it as "powerful" and "moving". Read more on the Piano Trio page.

Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre
JAN. 2008—I'm pleased to announce that I've been admitted as an Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre (CMC), the principal organization in Canada that promotes the music of professional Canadian composers nationally and internationally. Among other benefits, my scores and parts will be placed in CMC libraries across the country and be made available for borrowing, rental and purchase. Visit my CMC web page here.

New Audio Samples: Six Pieces & Red Moon Song Cycle
JAN. 2008—I've added a recording of another piece from Six Pieces, a performance by Michael Esch of the March. I've also uploaded recordings of three songs—Red Moon, The Man He Killed & The Drum—from my recent song cycle Red Moon & Other Songs of War performed by Melanie Conly and Peter Longworth.
